As part of her official visit to the Sultanate of Oman, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova met with Chairman of the Consultative Council of this country Sheikh Khalid bin Hilal al-Maawali on 29 January.
Greeting the Speaker of the Milli Majlis, the Chairman of the Consultative Council thanked Speaker Sahiba Gafarova for her acceptance of the invitation and visit to the Sultanate of Oman. Having witnessed contentment with the sound level of the relations between Oman and Azerbaijan, the Chairman of the Consultative Council referred to the parliaments’ special role in the progress of the relationship. Sheikh Khalid bin Hilal al-Maawali declared his confidence that this visit of the Speaker of the Milli Majlis was going to expand the relationship further still.
The Chairman of the Consultative Council also remarked upon the good level of the political relations, adding that the closeness of our peoples and countries provides grounds for a continued evolution of the relations.
Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova voiced her appreciation of the invitation to pay an official visit to the Sultanate of Oman and for the hospitality extended before recalling fondly her first meeting with the vis-à-vis on the margins of the 17th Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States in Algeria in 2023 as well as their continual meetings and discussions in international organisations ever since.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis said with pleasure that she is in Oman on an official visit today after the two visits of her vis-à-vis to Azerbaijan in February 2024 and February 2025 for the 14th and 15th Plenary Sessions of the APA; she said she was certain that this visit would make an input in the progress of the relations between our countries and parliaments.
They talked about the great potential to underpin the growth of the relations in all the areas. The decision of Azerbaijan to open the embassy clearly demonstrates our bilateral relations’ transition to a new level.
The existing strong potential to further co-operation in the economic, trade, investment, energy, transport, agricultural, tourism and other fields was brought up during the conversation.
The importance of the relations in education and culture was high-lit especially at the meeting. The Speaker of the Milli Majlis said that, in this sense, the visit of Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva to Oman in early January this year and the discussions held during that visit activated our co-operation in culture and tourism.
What else was emphasised was that the interaction of the parliaments contributes importantly to the bilateral and multilateral relations between our countries. The work that the inter-parliamentary friendship groups are doing is extremely important in this regard. Besides, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis mentioned in the conversation the high appreciation of Oman’s staunch support for Azerbaijan in international organisations. The Asian Parliamentary Assembly and the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network were referenced as important platforms in this regard.
As the conversation went on, Chairman of the Consultative Council of the Sultanate of Oman Sheikh Khalid bin Hilal al-Maawali remarked that they are witnessing the economic growth of Azerbaijan under the guidance of her wise leader. He said he was certain that this visit, too, will contribute to the advancement of the relations between the two countries.
