Baku, "innews media" — Azerbaijan plans to form a national team in sport fishing based on athletes’ performances in upcoming competitions.
According to "innews media", Azerbaijan Water Sports Federation Executive Vice President Farhad Aliyev made the remarks following the first stage of the Mingachevir Regatta 2026.
He said the performance of Azerbaijani athletes has been improving year by year.
“There has been progress in canoeing. Previously, there was only one athlete competing in canoeing, while now we have several representatives and a team. At the Azerbaijan Championship, both boys and girls compete in mixed disciplines. Training camps are continuing in Baku and Mingachevir. A decision has been made to use Mingachevir as a training base. The number of such training venues will increase next year,” Aliyev said.
The federation official also spoke about efforts to avoid overlapping competition schedules.
“The difficulty is that competitions can sometimes take place at the same time. This year, we tried to create intervals between tournaments in sailing, sport fishing, rowing, canoeing and kayaking. A fishing competition was held a week ago, while the Azerbaijan Sailing Championship took place three weeks earlier, in September. We will try to ensure that tournaments do not overlap, depending on our financial resources. Athletes, coaches and sports directors each have their own programmes. Everyone will continue their work,” he said.
Aliyev also discussed the development of sport fishing and opportunities for Azerbaijani athletes to compete internationally.
“Sport fishing has its own rules. European and world championships are held in this discipline. Previously, athletes could not participate in these tournaments because there was no federation. Now that they operate under the federation, they will be able to take part in international competitions. A tournament will be held in Türkiye within the next week. Based on the results of that competition, a national team will be formed and a competition calendar for the future will be determined,” the federation official said.
