A presentation of marathon canoe and kayak racing was held at the Kur Olympic Training and Sports Center in Mingachevir, organized by the Azerbaijan Water Sports Federation.

The event was attended by the Federation’s coaches and judges, as well as coaches of teams representing countries participating in the Mingachevir Regatta 2026 international competition.

During the event, attended by Farhad Aliyev, Executive Vice President of the Federation, and Ruud Heijselaar, Chairman of the Canoe Marathon Committee, participants watched a video introducing the canoe and kayak marathon disciplines. A detailed presentation on the sport was then shown on screen.

The presentation highlighted that, unlike sprint events, canoe and kayak marathon races are held over longer distances and require a higher level of endurance from athletes. Race courses may also include obstacles, turns and portages — sections where athletes leave their boats, carry them over a designated distance on land and then return them to the water.

Marathon races for adults often last around two hours. As a result, athletes’ endurance and technical preparation are assessed during pre-race training sessions.

To simulate portages, athletes practise getting out of the boat on land, carrying it and getting back into the boat with minimal loss of time. They also train turning techniques around buoys, drafting — following another boat to benefit from reduced resistance — and efficient navigation within a group.

At the end of the event, it was noted that further activities will be organized to support the development of canoe and kayak marathon racing in Azerbaijan and strengthen cooperation in the field.
