On May 17 at 19:00, an exhibition and lecture dedicated to the artist Grigory Gagarin will take place at the Russian House in Baku.

Diplomat, officer and talented artist Grigory Gagarin spent more than ten years of his life in the North and South Caucasus, and was a close friend of the poet Mikhail Lermontov. His powers of observation, interest and talent were embodied in a number of paintings, lithographs, drawings and photographs, in which he reproduced in great detail what was happening before his eyes. He sketched the architecture, nature and life of the mid-19th century, everything that attracted his attention. Particularly interesting is the series of his works “Types of Highlanders,” which accurately convey the characters of the characters described, their position, national clothes, and details of everyday life.

Researcher Rustam Huseynov will talk in detail about Gagarin’s works dedicated to Azerbaijan. The lecture will focus on his sketches of the national costume and paintings dedicated to the lost interiors of architectural monuments and historical events in which prince Gagarin was a participant. Visitors will be presented with an exhibition of reproductions of his works.

The works of the artist Grigory Gagarin, in addition to their artistic value, today are of great importance for historians, restorers and anthropologists. His sketches of national costume are of particular value to researchers and reconstructors of historical clothing.
