The exhibition and lecture by Rustam Huseynov about the works of the talented Russian painter Grigory Gagarin dedicated to Azerbaijan was held as part of the “Conversations on Culture and Art” project at the Russian House in Baku on May 17. The head of the Russian House in Baku, Irek Zinnurov, delivered a welcoming speech.
Diplomat, officer and talented painter prince Grigory Gagarin spent several years in Azerbaijan in the mid-XIXth century. His powers of observation, interest and talent were embodied in a number of paintings, lithographs, drawings and photographs, in which he sketched in great detail the architecture, nature and life of Azerbaijan in the mid-XIXth century.
In his lecture, Rustam Huseynov spoke in detail about the drawings of Grigory Gagarin, the most interesting cases from his biography and the fate of some of his works. The lecture showed in detail his paintings of unpreserved historical monuments of Azerbaijan and their interiors.
Visitors were presented with an exhibition of reproductions of works by Grigory Gagarin; the greatest interest of the audience was aroused by his sketches of national costumes of different regions of Azerbaijan. Grigory Gagarin loved to sketch people and their clothes, regardless of their status, during his travels and today these works are of great importance for historians of national costume, restorers and anthropologists in addition to their artistic value.
