The event, titled “Climate-Resilient Cities and Communities in the Caspian Region: Mobilizing Climate Finance for Urban Adaptation,” took place on 19 May and was jointly organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The event was opened by Ms. Anacláudia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat; Ms. Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, Deputy Executive Director of UNEP; and Aghakarim Samadzadeh, First Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Discussions focused on the impacts of climate change on cities and coastal communities in the Caspian region, the importance of strengthening regional cooperation on urban adaptation, and opportunities to mobilize climate finance and partnerships for resilient urban development. Participants exchanged experiences on environmental governance, coastal city resilience, and innovative solutions for climate adaptation.
The event also highlighted Azerbaijan’s efforts to advance climate-resilient urban development, including through the “Building Climate Resilient Cities and Communities in Azerbaijan” programme, implemented by UN-Habitat with UNEP and IOM, with financing from the Adaptation Fund.
The event brought together representatives of the Government of Azerbaijan, UN entities, international financial institutions, development partners and the private sector.
