As part of the “Victory Month” project, Baku State University (BSU) hosted an event titled “Heroes Who Live in Our Memory.”
Speaking at the event, BSU Vice-Rector Shahin Panahov said that the victory in the Patriotic War represents national will, determination, and what he described as the restoration of historical justice. He noted that one of the important chapters in the modern history of Azerbaijan was written during the Patriotic War, which began on September 27, 2020.
According to Panahov, the 44-day war demonstrated the solidarity of the Azerbaijani people, the capabilities of the country’s armed forces, and the determination to defend the homeland. He emphasized that this history would be passed on to future generations as an example of national solidarity, patriotism, and the struggle for freedom.
“This victory came at the cost of significant losses. Around 3,000 servicemen were killed in the Patriotic War, while thousands more were wounded and suffered lasting health consequences. The life stories of each of them serve as an example for young people,” Panahov said.
He added that Azerbaijan is now living in what he described as new realities shaped by the victory, while large-scale reconstruction and development projects are underway in areas affected by the conflict, alongside efforts to facilitate the return of former internally displaced persons.
Member of the Milli Majlis Aydin Huseynov said that the victory in the Patriotic War represented not only the restoration of historical justice but also, in his words, a revival of national pride.
“After the victory in Karabakh, and following the anti-terrorism measures carried out by the Azerbaijani Army on September 19–20, 2023, Azerbaijan ensured, alongside the restoration of its territorial integrity, what it describes as the full restoration of state sovereignty,” Huseynov said.
He noted that Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur subsequently entered a new stage of development. According to Huseynov, Azerbaijan has since sought to position itself as a country committed to peace and as a symbol of reconstruction and revival both in the region and internationally.
The event also featured remarks by Akif Agababali, Dean of the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science; Subhan Aliyev, a veteran of the Second Karabakh War; and Knyaz Aslan, Associate Professor at BSU and a participant in the First Karabakh War.
The event concluded with a cultural programme prepared by BSU students.
