Rector of Baku State University (BSU) Elchin Babayev delivered a speech at the academic session titled “From Knowledge to Technological Advantage: The Future of Science, University and Industry Cooperation,” held as part of the 6th Azerbaijan International Defence Exhibition – ADEX.
In his address, Elchin Babayev emphasized that, alongside engineering and technical sciences, fundamental sciences, law, international relations, and other academic disciplines also play an important role in the development of the defence industry.
He noted that the development of defence technologies goes beyond addressing purely technical challenges. Issues such as intellectual property protection, the legal framework governing dual-use technologies, international information exchange, and the application of artificial intelligence require a multidisciplinary approach involving different fields of science.
Elchin Babayev also stressed that fundamental research whose practical applications may appear distant today could provide the basis for significant technological innovations in the future.
The BSU Rector highlighted that the university’s role in the defence industry should not be limited to training specialists. According to him, universities can serve as an “early warning system” for industry by identifying and studying emerging scientific fields, technologies, and research findings at an early stage.
The session also addressed prospects for expanding inter-university cooperation. Participants highlighted the importance of developing joint laboratories, student projects, industry placements, master’s and doctoral programmes, and inter-university research platforms.
Elchin Babayev emphasized that cooperation between universities and the defence industry should not be limited to responding to existing challenges. Instead, universities should also contribute to identifying future challenges and developing innovative solutions.
Concluding his remarks, the BSU Rector stressed that inter-university cooperation should go beyond memoranda and events and develop into joint laboratories, collaborative projects, and practical technological solutions.
