On April 30, on International Jazz Day, a gala concert and award ceremony for the finalists of the I Am Jazzman 2025 competition for young performers took place in the Chamber and Organ Music Hall (Kirche). The I am Jazzman competition lights up new stars and gives young talents a chance to demonstrate their abilities to jazz professionals and spectators on the big stage.
The winners of the competition this year were pianist Nurlan Huseynzadeh and vocalist Elton Salimov. The winners and finalists of the competition were awarded diplomas and valuable prizes. This year, the competition was held in two qualifying rounds and a final, where both vocalists and instrumental performers performed.
The winners were determined by a jury consisting of:
Rain Sultanov - Honored Artist of Azerbaijan, founder and director of the Baku Jazz Festival.
Gasim Khalilov - a luminary of the national classical stage.
Diana Hajiyeva is a leading jazz vocalist of Azerbaijan, a participant of Eurovision 2017.
Leyla Efendiyeva is the director of the I AM JAZZMAN competition, the editor-in-chief of the first jazz magazine in Azerbaijan, “Jazz Dünyası”, and is the director of the country's jazz camp project.
The international “I Am Jazzman” competition was founded by Leyla Efendiyeva in 2006 on the basis of the Baku Jazz Festival and has become the main jazz platform for the launch of aspiring jazz musicians. The goal of the competition is to find talented young musicians who perform jazz professionally and with soul. This is a working formula for success, which was laid down for the identification, development and preparation, as well as further support of talented young musicians.
Information about the “I Am Jazzman 2025” competition is posted on the American website of Herbie Hancock Jazz Day at UNESCO. The competition is part of a worldwide network that celebrates Jazz Day around the world.
