As part of its commitment to supporting women and girls, the British Embassy in Baku, in partnership with Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction and the Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts, and together with leading UK architecture firms Zaha Hadid Architects, Chapman Taylor and Scott Brownrigg, launched the Women in Architecture competition for female students. The first phase concluded in December 2025, when four winners were announced by Lord John Alderdice at an event held at the Heydar Aliyev Centre, the iconic landmark designed by Zaha Hadid Architects.
Building on this success, the Embassy, in collaboration with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), organised a study visit to London for the four winners as the second phase of the programme. During the visit, the students met leading British architecture firms, including Zaha Hadid Architects, Chapman Taylor and Scott Brownrigg, whose representatives had participated in the evaluation and selection of competition entries.
The programme provided participants with a unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the work of internationally renowned architectural practices and to take part in workshops and professional development sessions led by industry experts.
The initiative culminated in a gala event at the headquarters of Zaha Hadid Architects in London, marking the completion of the Hope in Every Drop: Art and Architecture for Change competition. The project encouraged young architects and artists to explore innovative responses to one of the world's most pressing challenges – water scarcity, and to promote sustainable urban solutions through design and creativity.
